If your car has been sitting in Oakland with expired tags, you can still donate it through Ride Revival. In almost every case, an expired or lapsed registration does not stop your donation. What matters for the transfer is that you have a valid title in your name, not current stickers on the plate. You don’t have to renew, pay back registration fees, or get the car smogged just to donate. We send a free tow truck, handle the paperwork on our side, and you still receive a deductible tax receipt.
Here’s how it works in California: when you donate, you sign your California title over to Ride Revival’s partner charity, Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3). Once the tow driver picks up your vehicle in Oakland — whether it’s in Fruitvale, Eastmont, Rockridge, West Oakland, or the Oakland hills — responsibility for the car shifts to the charity. You’ll want to complete a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability with the DMV so you’re no longer on the hook for future tickets or fees. The vehicle does not need to run or be drivable; we regularly tow non-op and long-parked cars off driveways, carports, and street parking across the San Francisco Bay Area.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm you have the California title in your name
For an expired-registration car, the key item is a valid California title showing you as the owner. It’s okay if the registration is months or even years past due. Just locate the title (sometimes called the pink slip) in your records at home in Oakland. If it’s lost, we can often guide you on requesting a replacement from the DMV before pickup.
2. Tell us about your car and expired registration
Start your donation online or by phone and mention that your registration is expired or lapsed. Share basics like year, make, model, and where it’s parked in Oakland — driveway in Temescal, street parking in Lake Merritt, or garage in Montclair. This helps us schedule the right tow truck and confirm that registration status will not block the donation.
3. Schedule your free Oakland tow—running or not
You do not need to drive the car, renew the registration, or pay back DMV fees. Our licensed towing partner comes to you anywhere in Oakland or the wider Bay Area at no cost. Whether it’s been sitting for years, has dead tags, or won’t start, the driver will load it up and have you sign the title at pickup.
4. Sign the title to transfer ownership to the charity
At pickup, you’ll sign your California title over to Heritage for the Blind via Ride Revival. That signature is what legally transfers the vehicle; current tags are not required. The tow driver can show you exactly where to sign. Once it’s signed and the car is on the truck, the vehicle is no longer your responsibility physically or practically.
5. File your DMV Notice of Transfer & Release of Liability
After pickup, you should submit a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability to the California DMV (online or by mail). This step tells the state that the vehicle has been donated and you are no longer liable for tickets, fees, or future registration. It’s quick and protects you, especially when your car had long-expired tags.
6. Receive your tax receipt and feel good clearing the space
After your vehicle is processed, Heritage for the Blind will send you a tax receipt. Typically, you can deduct up to $500, and more if the charity’s sale price is higher and you file IRS Form 1098-C. Meanwhile, you’ve cleared a headache from your driveway or street spot in Oakland and supported services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
Potential complications to watch for
No title or title not in your name
Tip: Expired registration is usually fine, but we do need a valid title in your name to complete the donation. If the title lists someone else, or is missing, you may need to get a duplicate or transfer from the prior owner through the DMV before tow. Reach out and we’ll explain what’s required in your situation.
Active liens or loan still showing on the title
Tip: If your title still shows a bank or finance company as lienholder, we’ll likely need a lien release before donation. This is separate from registration status. Contact the lender to confirm the loan is paid and ask for a lien release letter, then keep that with your title. It helps avoid delays at pickup.
Vehicle stored in a tight or restricted location
Tip: Our tow trucks can handle most Oakland driveways, garages, and apartment lots, but very steep hills, locked garages, or tight backyard access can slow things down. Let us know in advance if the car is blocked in or has no keys so we can send the right truck and equipment and coordinate access with you or your building.
Unpaid tickets or registration back fees
Tip: Unpaid tickets or back DMV fees tied to the car typically do not need to be paid by you to donate. However, they might still appear under your name until the DMV processes the transfer and your Release of Liability. Don’t skip filing that form. It’s the best way to show the state the vehicle has changed hands.
