Oakland year-end car donation deadline: donate by Dec 31

In Oakland, your car must be picked up by December 31 for this year’s IRS deduction. Ride Revival offers fast, free towing through Dec 31 across the Bay Area—often same or next day.

For Oakland donors, the IRS rule is clear: your vehicle must be picked up by December 31 to count for this tax year. With Ride Revival, powered by Heritage for the Blind, we schedule free towing Monday–Saturday all December, including Christmas week. In most Bay Area metro areas, if you contact us by early afternoon on a weekday, we can often arrange same-day or next-business-day pickup. To be safe, call or submit the 2-minute form by December 27 to lock in a December 31 slot. Your car can be running or not—no repairs, smog, or inspection needed—just a signed title.

We’re local to how Oakland really works. Whether you’re in the Oakland hills near Montclair, commuting from Rockridge or Temescal, parking on a tight Lake Merritt side street, or out by Fruitvale, East Oakland, West Oakland, or Jack London Square, our tow partners know these neighborhoods. We also serve nearby Berkeley, Alameda, San Leandro, and the wider San Francisco Bay Area. You get a $500-plus tax receipt value potential (subject to IRS rules) and your donation helps Heritage for the Blind support people who are blind or visually impaired. Start now and cross both your clutter and your year-end tax deduction off the list in one quick step.

Your year-end donation timeline

1

Start your donation in 2 minutes

2 minutes

From anywhere in Oakland, complete our simple online form or call us—usually in under two minutes. Share basic details: contact info, vehicle location, and condition. No obligation, no credit card, and no need to have the car running or smogged. This locks in your intent before the December 31 rush.

2

Confirm your title and schedule pickup

5 minutes

Have your signed vehicle title ready in your Oakland home or office—no registration or keys are required in many cases. Our team will confirm eligibility, answer deadline questions, and offer the earliest pickup window. Call by December 27–28 to virtually guarantee a slot before or on December 31.

3

Free towing anywhere in the Oakland area

Same-day or next-day

Our towing partners come to you—apartments in Downtown Oakland, hills near Redwood Heights, garages in Grand Lake, or driveways in East Oakland. Pickup is free nationwide, Monday–Saturday, including Christmas week. In most Bay Area locations, calls before early afternoon can qualify for same-day or next-day towing.

4

Donation completed by December 31

30–45 minutes

At pickup, you hand over the signed title and keys (if available), and the tow driver completes the paperwork. When the truck leaves with your car, your donation is officially made for IRS purposes. If that happens on or before December 31, your deduction is for this tax year.

5

Receive your tax receipt and file

Within weeks

Heritage for the Blind will mail you a written tax acknowledgment, and once the vehicle is sold they’ll send IRS Form 1098-C for qualifying donations. You then use this to claim a potential $500-plus deduction (subject to sale price and IRS rules) on Schedule A of your federal return.

Year-end tax deduction facts

December 31 is the cutoff

For IRS purposes, the donation date is when the charity takes possession of your vehicle. If your Oakland pickup is completed on or before December 31, it counts for this tax year; January 1 or later counts for next year.

Form 1098-C for larger deductions

If Heritage for the Blind sells your donated car for more than $500, they will issue IRS Form 1098-C. This form shows the gross sale price, which generally caps the amount you can deduct above the standard $500 threshold.

How your deduction is calculated

If your vehicle sells for $500 or less, you can usually deduct up to $500 or your car’s fair market value, whichever is less. If it sells for more than $500, the deduction is generally limited to the actual sale price on Form 1098-C.

Itemizing on Schedule A

To use your Ride Revival car donation as a federal tax deduction, you must itemize deductions on Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Talk to a tax professional to see if itemizing makes sense for your situation.

Written acknowledgment within 30 days

Heritage for the Blind will send a written acknowledgment of your donation, typically within 30 days of the sale. Keep this with your records, along with Form 1098-C if issued, in case the IRS ever requests documentation.

FAQ

What is the last day I can donate my car in Oakland for this year’s taxes?
The hard IRS deadline is December 31. Your vehicle must be picked up and in the charity’s possession by that date to count for this tax year. With Ride Revival, we schedule free towing through December 31, including Christmas week. To comfortably secure a December 31 slot in the Oakland/Bay Area, contact us by December 27 whenever possible.
Does scheduling the pickup by December 31 count, or does the car have to be gone?
The car has to be picked up—simply scheduling isn’t enough. For IRS purposes, your donation date is when Heritage for the Blind, through our tow partners, actually takes possession of your vehicle. That’s why we urge Oakland donors to call or submit the form by December 27–28, so we can complete the tow on or before December 31.
Are you doing pickups during Christmas week and around New Year’s?
Yes. Ride Revival, working with Heritage for the Blind, schedules pickups Monday–Saturday all year, including Christmas week and up to December 31 in Oakland and across the Bay Area. Availability tightens as the year ends, so earlier is better. Same-day or next-day is often possible for weekday calls before early afternoon, but specific slots can fill quickly.
My car doesn’t run. Can I still donate it and get a deduction?
Yes. Non-running and damaged vehicles are welcome, and towing is still free. There’s no inspection or repairs needed; just have a signed title. We regularly pick up non-running vehicles from driveways, garages, and street parking spots across Oakland. As long as the tow truck can access the vehicle and we complete pickup by December 31, it can qualify for this year’s deduction.
What paperwork do I need ready on pickup day?
In most cases, you only need a properly signed vehicle title and a valid ID. Registration is helpful but not always required. At pickup, you’ll sign the title over and the tow driver provides a preliminary receipt. Heritage for the Blind will later mail your official acknowledgment and, for qualifying donations, IRS Form 1098-C. Always follow California DMV rules when releasing liability.
How much can I deduct for my Oakland car donation?
If your car sells for $500 or less, you can usually deduct up to $500 or the vehicle’s fair market value, whichever is less. If it sells for more than $500, your deduction is generally limited to the actual sale price reported on Form 1098-C. You must itemize on Schedule A to claim it. For personal tax advice, consult a tax professional or preparer.
How long does the whole process take from first call to receipt?
The initial form or phone call usually takes about two minutes. In much of the Oakland and greater San Francisco Bay Area, pickup can often be scheduled for the same day or next business day if you contact us before early afternoon. After the vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind will mail your written acknowledgment and Form 1098-C (when applicable), typically within a few weeks.
