For IRS purposes, your car donation date is the day your vehicle is physically picked up—not the day you call or submit the form. That means your car must be towed away on or before December 31 to qualify as a tax-deductible donation for this year. To be safe, Ride Revival recommends Oakland donors schedule pickup 3–5 business days before December 31. Heritage for the Blind, our 501(c)(3) nonprofit partner (EIN 58-2164446), handles the towing at no cost to you and operates Monday–Saturday through the holiday season.
Ride Revival makes year-end car donation fast for Oakland and San Francisco Bay Area neighbors—from Rockridge, Temescal, and Grand Lake to Fruitvale, Eastmont, West Oakland, and the Oakland hills. We also serve nearby cities like Berkeley, Alameda, San Leandro, and beyond. You can complete our secure online form in about two minutes or call to schedule a convenient pickup time. Your vehicle can be running or not; no smog check, inspection, or repairs are required. Once your car sells, Heritage for the Blind mails you a written acknowledgment (and IRS Form 1098-C for vehicles valued over $500). The tax year for your deduction is locked in by the pickup date, not the mailing date of the receipt—so getting on the calendar before year-end is what matters most.
Your year-end donation timeline
Start your 2‑minute Oakland donation form or call
2 minutesProvide basic info about your car, your Oakland (or nearby) pickup address, and how to reach you. It takes about two minutes. Be sure to note you want pickup completed by December 31 so we can prioritize a year-end slot.
Choose a pickup window before December 31
5 minutesA Heritage for the Blind scheduling specialist contacts you to confirm a convenient pickup window, Monday–Saturday. To safely meet the IRS cutoff, we recommend choosing a date at least 3–5 business days before December 31 where possible.
Prepare your title and keys for the tow driver
10–15 minutesBefore pickup day, remove personal items and license plates if required in your state, and have the title and keys ready. The driver will guide you through signing the title. No repairs, smog, or inspection are needed—even for non-running vehicles.
Vehicle is towed free—your tax year is locked in
Pickup dayOn the day your car is physically towed—anywhere in Oakland or the Bay Area—that date becomes your official IRS donation date. As long as pickup happens on or before December 31, your deduction applies to this tax year.
Receive your written acknowledgment and tax forms
Within weeks after saleAfter Heritage for the Blind sells your vehicle, they mail you a written acknowledgment. If your car’s deductible value is over $500, you’ll also receive IRS Form 1098‑C. You’ll use this when you itemize on Schedule A for your federal return.
Year-end tax deduction facts
IRS counts the pickup date, not the call
For vehicle donations, the IRS treats the date your car is actually picked up as the donation date. Calling or filling out the form by December 31 is not enough—the tow truck must collect your vehicle by year-end.
December 31 pickup = this tax year’s deduction
If your car is towed away on or before December 31, you may claim the deduction on this tax year’s return. If pickup slips to January, the deduction applies to the next tax year—even if you scheduled it in December.
Form 1098‑C for vehicles over $500
When your donated vehicle’s deductible value exceeds $500, Heritage for the Blind issues IRS Form 1098‑C after the sale. This form shows the gross sale price and must be included with your federal return if you claim the deduction.
Deduction usually based on sale price
In most cases, the IRS limits your car donation deduction to the amount the charity receives when the car is sold. The final sale price appears on your acknowledgment or Form 1098‑C and is what you’ll use when itemizing deductions.
You must itemize on Schedule A
To benefit from a vehicle donation deduction, you typically must itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal tax return. If you take the standard deduction, consult your tax advisor to see whether itemizing makes sense for you.
